The kitchen is full of machines, gadgets, devices, tools, and utensils that should be replaced when they become ineffective or dirty. Here’s some guidance on when to get rid of common household items:

Wooden Utensils

Replace the tools every one or two years. Frequently used items shouldn’t be used more than six months. Remember, if a wooden utensil has an unpleasant odor, it needs to be discarded. (Whenever anything – hand towels, shoes, etc. – has an unusual smell, it needs to be thrown away or cleaned.)

Nonstick Pans

With solid coating, these pans should last seven years. (With modern cookware, there’s no need to worry about getting sick from the coating flaking off.)

Coffeemakers

It’s time to get a new machine when yours doesn’t get the water hot enough. Coffee experts recommend brewing coffee to 195°F to 205°F. If yours doesn’t reach that temperature, the heating element is probably shot.

Small Appliances

Hand mixers, blenders, toasters, and other machines can last decades with proper care. In general, they need to be replaced when they don’t work well. If you have to take breaks, tap them, jiggle cords, or take other actions while using them, it’s time for a replacement. It’s usually not cost-effective to fix these appliances, so get new versions when they conk out.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions for care and operation will lead to years of use for most kitchen machines and utensils. When life and luck lead to problems, replace them to keep cooking efficient and fun.
