Spring is here, the sun’s out, and it’s the perfect time for a bike ride. But not everyone gets to enjoy it—whether they have never learned to ride or just haven’t been on a bike in years.

Biking is losing ground across all ages. The 2022 U.S. Bicycling Participation Report found that nearly half of children between the ages of 3 and 17 did not ride a bike once in 2021. And many adults, too, have swapped two wheels for four – or for screens. Suburban sprawl, poor infrastructure, and digital distractions are keeping more people off bikes.

That’s a shame, because biking isn’t just fun.  It’s great for:

  • Fitness and stamina
  • Coordination and balance
  • Social skills (bike rides = instant bonding)
  • Mental health & stress relief
  • Attention spans

Whether you’re teaching a child to ride for the first time or thinking about getting back on a bike yourself, now’s the perfect time to start. Here’s how:

Sign up for rider education programs. Programs like   work with schools to provide cycling education and equipment. Every state has a course to teach new riders of all ages. If your school or community doesn’t offer one, ask about starting it.

Learn to teach bike riding. Teaching looks easy… until you try it. Professional trainers and online resources can help you break it down step by step, whether you’re guiding a child or an adult.

Join a bike camp. Many local programs offer half-day and full-day sessions where children (and sometimes adults!) can build confidence on two wheels.

Take a refresher course. If it’s been years since you last rode, consider joining a beginner-friendly group ride or skills class to ease back in. Many local bike shops and communities offer them.

Biking is more than just a childhood milestone—it’s a lifelong skill that brings freedom, fun, and fitness at any age. Whether you’re helping a child learn to ride for the first time or rediscovering the joy of cycling yourself, every push of the pedals leads to new adventures. So, grab a helmet, encourage someone to start, and keep the tradition rolling!
