Summer is here, which means pool days, beach trips, and cooling off in the water. Swimming isn’t just a great way to beat the heat; it’s also great exercise. But while water can bring fun and relaxation, it also comes with risks, especially for young children.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 15, and it often happens faster and more quietly than many people expect. Fortunately, a few simple precautions can make all the difference. Here are a few tips for a season of safe water fun:

Always supervise young swimmers: Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent. An adult who can swim should always keep a close eye on children in and around the water.

Make sure everyone can swim: Learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent. Even toddlers as young as one can start lessons, and it’s never too late for older kids – or adults – to build confidence in the water.

Know CPR: Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death for children, and bystanders are often the first to respond, not lifeguards. CPR can increase survival rates by 91%. Taking a CPR course could help save a life.

Stay away from drains: Pool drains and suction openings can trap hair, jewelry, or bathing suits making it difficult for swimmers to resurface. Always ensure pool drain covers are secure and that kids avoid playing near them.

Let’s make this summer a time of joy and the source of cherished memories. By approaching the water with care, we can create moments of pure bliss for ourselves and our loved ones.
