It’s summertime, which means barbecues, beach days, and bike rides. These outdoor activities bring hours of fun but also increase the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

The best way to keep cool is to stay hydrated. Unfortunately, many people do not always recognize the signs that their bodies need more fluids.

Some signs of dehydration in adults may include:

  • Strong thirst
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Flushed or red skin

In children, signs of dehydration may look different.  Watch for:

  • Dry lips or tongue
  • Tiredness or lack of energy
  • No tears when crying
  • Cool, blotchy hands and feet
  • Irritability
  • Decreased urination

Dehydration is a serious condition and should be addressed as soon as symptoms appear. Because these signs can be easy to miss or mistaken for other issues, it is important to watch yourself and others, especially children, during outdoor activities.

The best way to prevent dehydration is to stay ahead of it.  Drink fluids before, during, and after time spent outside. Juicy options like watermelon, cucumbers, lemonade, and frozen fruit pops can help keep you and your family hydrated. Most fluids, except alcohol, help your body regulate temperature and transport nutrients and oxygen. Kids and adults are more likely to keep sipping when snacks are fun and flavorful.
