Thinking of warming up with a nice cup of tea but not sure which one to pick? With so many options out there, it can feel overwhelming. Not anymore. Here are some tea highlights:
First off, did you know that white, green, oolong, and black teas are products of the same plant, Camellia sinensis? The difference is when they’re picked and how they’re processed.
- Green teas are harvested early and not oxidized, which gives them a fresh, grassy flavor.
- Black teas are picked later and oxidized longer, making them bold and strong.
- Oolong teas fall somewhere in the middle – wilted in the sun and partially oxidized for a balanced taste.
- White teas are delicate because they are harvested shortly after they bud and are minimally processed.
People in search of a healthy drink can’t go wrong with any tea. They all have heart-healthy antioxidants and a little caffeine boost. (FYI, “herbal teas” aren’t technically tea because they don’t come from the tea plant.)
Different blends and additives create even more flavors. For example, Earl Grey mixes black tea with bergamot oil, and Genmaicha blends green tea with roasted brown rice for a smoky twist. There’s also a world of interesting tea drinks like milk teas, chai, and matcha to sip.
With so many ways to enjoy tea, it’s clear why only water is enjoyed more than tea.
