Every day, there’s some confusing health information in the news. But when it comes to eating fruit and vegetables, the message is clear: Eating fruit is essential for good health.

The rainbow of produce provides a host of nutrients that help the body fight cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes; improve gastrointestinal health and vision; and perform many functions. Unfortunately, four out of five adults aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables daily, so they miss out on these health benefits.

With National Fruits and Veggies Month upon us, there’s no better time to enhance your produce intake and reap the health rewards.

Eat Produce Throughout the Day. Fruits are often relegated to breakfast and dessert, and vegetables only show up for lunch and dinner. However, fruits can be the stars of salads and Mediterranean dinners and vegetables are great in frittatas and cakes.

Freeze! Summer fruit makes the season a little more fun. To keep the fun going, freeze your favorite produce and enjoy them all year. Frozen vegetables and fruits in your grocer’s freezers are harvested when they are ripe, so you get fresh and nutritious items any time of the year.

Sprinkle them in. Add fruits and vegetables wherever you can. Top your pizza with pineapple or broccoli. Cover burgers with mushrooms or tomatoes. Add spinach to meatloaf. Be creative!

Go Dry. Instead of reaching for salty or sweet snacks, nibble on dried fruit. To keep things healthy, make sure yours aren’t covered in sugar.

Today, there are so many varieties of delicious fruits and vegetables at your local stores and so many ways to enjoy them. Let this month be the start of a lifetime of healthy eating habits.
