Have you been feeling sluggish, unproductive, or sad lately? It might be the stress of the holiday season, or your body reacting to shorter days and less sunlight. These feelings are often called the winter blues.

During the colder months, your body doesn’t get as much sunlight as it usually does. Combined with holiday pressure and end-of-year deadlines, this can affect your mood and sleep schedule. Feeling lazy, tired, or down sometimes is normal.  The important thing is not to let these feelings take over or cause extra stress.

Start by tidying up your space. As the popular saying goes, “A clear space makes for a clear mind”. Open your blinds and let in as much natural light as you can. A brighter room can make a big difference in how you feel.

Next, fight off boredom, which often adds to winter sadness. Try a new hobby, or invite a friend out for coffee. If you love animals, volunteer at an animal shelter or visit a petting zoo. Even caring for houseplants can help boost your mood. These activities keep you active and give you a healthy outlet for stress.

If your feelings are more intense or last for several weeks, you may be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  This is a common condition, and it is important to talk with a healthcare professional or counselor if you think you might have it.

Start the new year with a happier, healthier mindset.  Small changes can help you stay positive and feel more like yourself, even when the days are dark and cold.
