Another new year, another set of ambitious New Year’s resolutions.
Inevitably, these, like all the previous ones, often fade away. And when they do, they leave behind feelings of shame and guilt.
Why not skip the cycle this year?
Focus on evolving, not completely changing who you are.
Instead of aiming for major life changes, focus on making small improvements. For example, rather than setting a goal to read five books every month, try spending less time scrolling on your phone.
Build habits that support your well-being, not just your appearance. Start a mindful meditation practice instead of focusing only on weight loss. When you make progress, reward yourself. If you’ve been working on being optimistic, treat yourself to something that makes you feel good, such as a massage or a fun outing.
For the tough changes, ask for help. Quitting smoking, for instance, is incredibly challenging but also life-changing. Support groups, healthcare professionals, and close friends can all play a role in your success.
After a busy and often stressful holiday season, major changes might feel overwhelming. Instead of making resolutions only in January, focus on meaningful lifestyle adjustments throughout the year.
There’s no deadline on doing something that improves your life.
