Winter’s freezing temperatures, harsh winds, and dry indoor heat can be tough on your hair. You can’t control the weather, but you can take steps to protect your strands.

Be Gentle

Cold weather makes your hair more fragile. Avoid blow-drying or using hot tools and opt for a wide-tooth comb to detangle gently.

Go Natural

Coloring or chemically straightening your hair can cause it to become weakened. Give your hair a break from these treatments during the winter months.

Loosen Up

Tight hairstyles, such as braids and buns, can lead to breakage, especially in dry weather conditions. If you wear these styles, don’t pull them too tightly.

Moisturize

Cold air and indoor heat can dry out your scalp.  Ask a healthcare or hair care professional about the best oils, shampoos, hair masks, serums, leave-in conditioners, or other products that can keep your scalp healthy and your hair hydrated.

Wash Smart

The proper shampoo routine depends on your hair type. Oily hair may need more frequent washing, while chemically treated or dry hair may need less. Use a gentle shampoo and follow with a conditioner that’s suitable for your hair.

Eat for Healthy Hair

Your diet also matters.  Sweet potatoes and winter squash provide vitamin A. Leafy greens are rich in iron and vitamin C. Fatty fish and eggs are great sources of vitamin D. Many foods are also fortified with these nutrients that will keep your hair shiny and strong.

Wear Silk

Wearing a hat protects your hair from the wind, but it can also cause friction. Choose a hat lined with satin or silk, or wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf before putting on your winter hat.

With a few smart habits, your hair can remain healthy and strong throughout the winter.
