Don’t let their flimsiness fool you. Resistance bands are one of the best tools for building muscle.

A resistance band is a thin stretchy piece of plastic or tubing with two flexible handles on each end. Every gym has a set in a rainbow of colors, with each color representing a different level of tension. Bands can be tied or left loose and used in many ways to work almost every body part.

They are great on their own or as an addition to your routine. You can use them to warm up before a workout or cool down afterward.

Research shows that resistance bands can build strength just as effectively as weights. In fact, they often apply more constant tension to your muscles than barbells or dumbbells.

But while many people are familiar with free weights, resistance bands can be confusing at first. Most gyms don’t offer classes that focus only on band use. However, they are commonly used in workouts like Pilates and Full-
body routines, and  TRX classes.

If you’re unsure how to use them, ask a personal trainer or fitness instructor at your gym for guidance. They can show you proper movements, recommend the right resistance level, and help you use correct form. As with any new exercise routine, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider or certified fitness professional to make sure the plan is safe and right for your fitness level.

People at every fitness level can benefit from resistance bands. Originally designed to help older adults regain strength, they are now used by elite athletes to target smaller muscle groups in their warm-up routine or even to rehab from an injury.

One of the biggest advantages is portability.  Bands are lightweight and easy to pack, making it simple to work out in a hotel room or small space. Even at a desk, you can slip one on a band and do leg exercises.

Go ahead and bring some welcome tension to your day. Resistance bands are worth trying.
