It’s Back-to-School Time. Regardless of whether this is a time of celebration or dread, it’s a time of adjustment for students and their parents.

To make the return to the classroom less stressful, students should try these tips:

Get enough sleep. Over the summer, it’s easy to fall into a late-night routine. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time every day before school starts.. Before classes are in session, a consistent bedtime routine needs to be established. Additionally, teens require eight to 10 hours of sleep each night, so it is recommended that they go to bed before midnight. To help kids sleep, they should turn off electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime.

Eat a healthy breakfast.  Even though mornings can feel rushed, it’s important not to skip breakfast. A balanced meal can include fiber-rich whole grains, a good source of protein, and healthy fats. This combination will provide the energy needed to get through the day.

Schedule health exams. Make sure you’re up to date on physicals, vaccinations, and vision exams. Children and teenagers grow quickly, so regular visits help keep everything on track.

Review safety information. Go over the rules, laws, and recommendations for walking, riding a bike, or driving to and from school.

Parents also have some tasks to complete before classes begin. They should:

  • Alert the school about any allergies or medical concerns the child may have. Work with the school nurse to ensure the proper precautions are in place to keep your student safe. Discuss realistic strategies with students to address bullying.
  • Work with your child to create guidelines for using electronic devices at school.
  • Involve students in planning breakfasts and lunches. This increases the chances they will eat them.
  • Set up a routine with input from their children. Ensure that any after-school activities are scheduled on the calendar to stay organized and on track.

These tips will give you a great start to the new school year.
