Summer is a great time to have get-togethers with loved ones. Unfortunately, it is also very common for people with food allergies and sensitivities to suffer an attack from cross-contact or accidental exposure to triggers. The most common food allergens are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, sesame, and soy. There are many signs of an allergic reaction, but the most common are:

  • Hives or skin redness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Itchiness
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Swelling of the throat causing difficulty breathing
  • Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth

If you prepare food for a get-together, knowing all guests’ allergies and intolerances is important. To minimize the risk of exposure, follow these food safety tips:

  • Separate allergy-safe foods from normal foods
  • Be aware of any cross-contact between popular allergens
  • Use soap and water to clean utensils and cookware while preparing meals
  • Clean your grill carefully
  • Label all foods that contain known allergens
  • Use separate utensils when serving to avoid cross-contact
