Brinner is the hot, new meal. Brinner is an evening meal of traditional breakfast food. One great option for brinner is savory oatmeal.
You’re probably familiar with sweet oatmeal – hot cereal topped with strawberries, honey, bananas, brown sugar, peaches, or one of many other sweet delights. However, oatmeal can also be a savory dish. Oatmeal mixes with poultry, strong cheeses, herbs, olives, spicy peppers, and sauces.
Give your oatmeal a Mediterranean twist by adding crumbled pieces of feta cheese, black olives, scallions, and cilantro. Or, brighten up your bowl of oatmeal with cooked spinach and peas, shaved Parmesan cheese, and fresh mint. Oatmeal, sautéed kale and onion, and a few morsels of goat cheese are full of nutrition and bold flavors.
Because of the whole grain oats in these dishes, the oatmeal alone helps reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Plus, it’s a great fiber, manganese, and zinc source. The fiber found in oats plays a vital role in lowering total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. In addition, this whole grain is also bursting with antioxidants, which reduce the chances of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Its mild flavor makes oatmeal little more than a vehicle for foods and herbs that are stirred into it. Experiment with items in your party and refrigerator to find fabulous new recipes to bring umami to oatmeal.
